Tree Pruning: Why Is It Necessary?

Some homeowners may be unaware of the value of regular tree maintenance however tree pruning performed with expert care can lead to several benefits. Tree pruning is essential to keep your trees healthy, lively and safe on your property. Our arborists will significantly improve the health of your trees. Using correct pruning techniques we can make your trees more aesthetically pleasing. Proper tree care also greatly reduces the risk of trees producing weak and brittle branches that can become hazardous and unsafe.

Benefits explained:

Tree Appearance

Trees have aesthetic value and add beauty to their surroundings. They soften harsh lines of buildings, screen unsightly views and provide Ayrshire with abundant greenery and beautiful natural landscapes. Hedges and Trees that are not pruned on a regular basis can become unruly and unmanageable, they can grow in unpredictable ways and take on rowdy appearances over time. At West Coast Tree surgeons all our staff are trained to the highest industry standards and we believe Aesthetics matter! Our expert arborists can transform your trees into works of art.

Tree Health

A trees health can be harmed by dead, diseased or damaged limbs. It is critical to remove dead and diseased branches to limit the chance of insects and disease spreading. The trees lifespan will be extended and the risk of falling branches will be reduced. Overgrown vegetation can also block out much needed sunshine, putting you in the shade and depriving other trees and shrubs the UV light they require to thrive. Our trained arborists can assess the health of your trees and formulate a service strategy that guarantees optimal results. If left too long untreated, an unhealthy specimen could deteriorate and die, resulting in costly removal. As always, the best cure is prevention. It is critical to prune a tree in a way that promotes its health and growth and that’s exactly what we do!

Improved Safety

If not for health and aesthetics, consider safety when deciding whether it’s time to call in the professionals. A neglected or damaged tree can become a hazard, which is why safety is so important. Damaged branches may fall and cause injuries or entire trees can topple. With correct pruning, the shape of the tree’s limbs and branches can be modified to meet the tree’s structural needs more efficiently. A well-maintained tree greatly reduces the likelihood of its limbs breaking and branches falling. Our qualified arborists are trained to identify and rectify any potential hazards

Tree Damage

Storms can cause a lot of damage and a tree affected by strong winds or hit by lightning may require professional help. Neglecting damage can lead to degradation and create a hazard. Our arborists can assess the extent of the damage to your trees as well as the likelihood of future damage. We are also capable of removing large damaged limbs and downed trees from your property safely.   Our 3 main pruning options are;

Crown Thinning

Crown thinning is the selective removal of stems and branches to thin out the fullness of the trees crown. With proper techniques, crown thinning reduces tree density and creates a balanced crown structure without altering the shape or size of the tree. It also helps reduce the weight on heavy limbs and removes dead, weak, overreaching or duplicated branches. Thinning allows sunlight to reach the interior of the crown, helping the whole tree become healthier. It is a good tree care option if you desire more sunlight to pass through the canopy of the tree and into your garden. Another common reason for crown thinning is to protect the tree from storm damage by reducing wind resistance.

Crown Lifting

This is when Lower Branches are removed to effectively raise the crown, which is the whole branch structure of the tree. This creates a higher tree canopy which benefits include; keeping branches away from buildings, opening up desirable views otherwise blocked by the trees lower branches and allowing more sunlight into your garden. When crown lifting trees, the large primary branches that grow directly from the trunk should be left as removing them creates large wounds that can lead to decay. Care should also be taken to leave the crown at least two thirds of the total height of the tree.

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction is one of the most common pruning techniques arborists use to control the size of the tree whilst maintaining the natural shape of its crown. It is also used to reduce stress on individual branches or the tree as a whole. It can make the tree more suited to its immediate environment or reduce the effects of shading and allow more sunlight to pass through into your garden. Crown reduction should not be confused with ‘topping’, an unprofessional indiscriminate and harmful treatment often carried out by unqualified general tradespeople with no expertise. Tree Surgery can be extremely dangerous if not undertaken by qualified professionals. You should not attempt to prune large trees without the proper training and safety measures. Our team of arborists are trained to work at heights and have the machinery, equipment and experience to ensure all workers, residents and pedestrians are kept safe from any harm. Your trees need the greatest possible care and remarkable results require expert knowledge. Contact West Coast Tree Surgeons today for all your Tree Pruning and Tree Care needs.
